New kitchen is finally cooking as companies come to the rescue
Denise and George Tretiak featured in the paper in May 2010, after they paid a $10,000 deposit for a new kitchen to Marquardt Granite Kitchen Factory Pty Ltd at Mascot.
According to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), that company went into voluntary liquidation in March 2010.
Left out of pocket and without a kitchen for 12 months, the couple were at a loss until they received an email from the sales and marketing manager of Blum Australia, David Noakes.
After reading about the couple's plight, Mr Noakes got in touch with the paper to offer help to Mr and Mrs Tretiak.
Blum provided free kitchen hardware including hinges for cupboards and drawers.
European kitchen appliances company Blanco, which suffered financial losses in their dealings with Marquardt, provided a rangehood, dishwasher sink and taps at cost.
Another creditor, Euro Marble (Aust) Pty Ltd of Marrickville, gave benchtops and splashbacks at a heavily discounted price.
"It was very painful, the whole experience, but we are very happy with our new kitchen," Mrs Tretiak said.
"It is thanks to the Leader's interest in our story."
Mr Tretiak said they were also impressed by the generosity and support of the businesses involved in their new kitchen.
"It has restored my faith; the majority of people out there are honest and want to do the right thing," he said.
SV Partners, the appointed liquidators for the Marquardt, estimate proceedings will be wound up by December.
